i wanted to make on-the-go oatmeal bars without the artificial ingredients found in commercial bars. i added almonds and dried cranberries… making again in a few days i think dried cherries and walnuts….. this has a great texture as well,” according to stormy hunt. i was looking for a way to have my oatmeal on the go in the morning. i was expecting this bar to be more granola like and crunchy. the recipe where i followed the directions came out more cake like and held together well. i love the simplistic recipe and add dried fruit, i cut the sugar back as well as substitute apple sauce for the oil. as is, they do have a pleasant oatmeal flavor with just a touch or cinnamon, but i think the next time i am going to try some add ins. i added cranberries and raisins to mine! i drained some of the liquid out and it turned out great. i added raisins and raw almonds, i lowered the temperature to 320 so it wouldn’t burn on the outside before it was done on the inside. we baked it in a 9×13 pan and the kids loved it. i added a bit more spice and threw in some raisins and dried cranberries.

then, i flipped it and cooked it on the rack for another 5 minutes. i used a pre-divided brownie pan and it worked well. i would have loved some chopped nuts and a bit more cinnamon to make it perfection. i read many of the reviews and thought i would give it a try. i added chocolate chips…don’t listen to reviews that add less than a cup of milk- i followed their advice and they turned out awful and dry. i added strawberries to one batch and blueberries to the other. i substituted the milk with greek yogurt and it came out well. i used a 4 oz carton of unsweetened applesauce in place of the oil and no white sugar. next time i plan to add some fruit with the hope it will make the bars a tad moister. i used this recipe as a base and added a whole bunch of odds and ends in the pantry that i wanted to use up. i cooked for the prescribed time but still a bit soft so another 15 minutes or so. as this recipe is a base, i did make changes: i subbed plain unsweetened almond milk for the dairy milk, and to add protein back to the bars i added two scoops of unflavored protein powder. i threw in some frozen blueberries and loved it.
