hopefully i make up for that long wait by posting what i think is the best version of it. i just made this for dinner and it definitely is the best baked ziti i’ve ever had. i made this recipe as a last-minute dinner, and my family loved it! to me, the next-day leftovers are are even better, but sometimes can be a little dry so i love the amount of sauce with this recipe! so i made it for him from this recipe and oh my did i receive a big kiss on the mouth for doing so!!! the only other change i made was to cut this recipe in half and it was plenty even for 4 people. sauce and a can of fire roasted tomatoes because i like the chunks. and i really piled on the mozzarella. how many days in advance can i make it without freezing it i make a lot of italian dishes, and the simplicity of this recipe surprised me.
i do make a couple of changes to this recipe, i add about 1/2 cup of asiago and mix it with the pecorino and i add about 1/2 cup red wine to deglaze the sausage and onions. i think it’s because of the ricotta and mozzarella which i think aren’t enough. the second and subsequent times i added a bit more pecorino. of course you can cut the recipe down to a more manageable size, but i do the full service for ten. but i wanted to see if i was nailing it according to the expert. i used turkey hot and traditional sausage instead of pork. i wouldn’t change a thing when making it again, the flavors were all spot on – love the mix of sweet and spicy sausage. when it goes on sale at costco i drop in and buy a few jars for the pantry, two jars for a little over $8. we made it mostly with ground turkey and a bit of sausage, as i need more healthy. made it for christmas day dinner and it was a huge success!
while some recipes might be satisfied making baked ziti using a basic meat sauce, this one is made with a good amount of seasonings which adds a ton of flavour into the meat itself which then seeps into the tomato sauce as it simmers away…. you may never make bolognese again – just make spaghetti with this meat sauce instead!???? baked ziti is an american classic pasta bake made with a tomato based meat sauce similar to bolognese. this version i make is a classic one – except i like to use a boost of extra seasonings so the meat sauce is loaded with flavour! meat – use all beef for a classic version, though if you want to make the meat sauce even more amazing, then use 50/50 pork and beef (pork makes the meat sauce richer and adds flavour!). fennel is optional but if you use a combination of pork and beef for the meat sauce, it gives it an extra special touch because pork and fennel are a classic pairing! cook the ziti and sauce, then let them cool before assembling the baked ziti. cover loosely with foil so it doesn’t stick to the cheese, then bake for 20 minutes. penne is a perfect substitute – it’s basically ziti but with ridges on the surface instead of being smooth. here’s a few suggestions for things to serve on the side.
i see myself on the couch tonight, coddling a bowl of this baked ziti and binge watching something brainless on netflix. just wanted to say thanks so much for this ziti recipe which was an instant family favourite. i made your enchilada sauce and used it in your pasta lasagna. would this recipe be a good mix for the last of the sauce i have in the fridge. only used ground beef and can say your idea of incorporating the fennel seeds is genius. hi nagi, i cooked this and i wanted to check whether the ricotta should have melted and blended into the sauce ….it was still kind of intact but the cheddar and parmesan cheeses had melted. it really depends on the ricotta and how dry or creamy it was at the start. i substituted quorn meatless grounds for the beef, and it came out great! it was wonderful, everyone loved it and went back for seconds.
